Larry Smith – owner and President
Larry was born and raised in Carrboro. He began his adventures in construction at his father’s side, working on their family home as a teenager. After high school Larry got on his motorcycle and headed west, where he worked as a carpenter building custom homes and additions in Colorado and Montana for about ten years. In 1984 Larry returned to Carrboro and joined Space Builders (then an employee-owned company) as a job manager and owner.
Since starting New Dimensions with his wife, Susan Fowler, in 1995, Larry has managed the construction of many more new homes, additions, and renovation projects. Larry is a licensed private pilot, and when he isn’t working, he enjoys flying, water skiing, snow skiing, and following Tarheel basketball and Denver Broncos football.
Susan Fowler – owner, financial manager, and estimator
Susan grew up in River Forest, IL, a suburb of Chicago. She landed in Chapel Hill in 1977 with a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester and a few years of carpentry and construction management experience. After working together at DesignWorks for about a year, Susan and Giles Blunden, with a few other partners, founded Space Builders as an employee-owned design and construction firm. Susan served Space Builders first as a job manager then as general manager until 1991, during which time she earned an MEd. in Adult Education and Organizational Development at UNC Chapel Hill.
Since the beginning, Susan has helped Larry with New Dimensions, primarily as financial manager. Now, after a long career in the nonprofit sector, Susan has returned to a more active role in New Dimensions, serving as estimator and assisting Larry with project management.
